Why See Here Lies Love?
A new staging of the Imelda Marcos musical
A new version of the Off-Broadway musical that first premiered at the Public Theater in 2013 has launched in Seattle, telling the outrageous true story of former Filipina First Lady, Imelda Marcos. Whereas before the previous production was staged as an immersive experience in New York, it has been retooled for a proper auditorium show, and if successful, may very well head to Broadway soon! Helmed by Tony-nominated Alex Timbers (Peter and the Starcatcher), the leads from the original cast have reprised their roles, with Jaygee Macapugay as Imelda, Conrad Ricamora as Aquino, and Melody Butiu as Estrella.
Originally created as a concept album in collaboration between David Byrne and Fatboy Slim, it was developed shortly afterwards into a disco-themed rock musical. Loosely following the narrative structure of Evita, Here Lies Love shows us the rapid rise to fame of Imelda Marcos through her marriage to the despot Ferdinand Marcos from young dreamer to stateswoman. But power and pride comes before a fall as she discovers, when she descends into infamy through her outrageous spending sprees (more than 2,700 pairs of shoes) and opulent lifestyle, while her husband tortured thousands through his 20-year dictatorship.
Opening night: 7 April 2017
