This lifelike doll sparks both curiosity and chaos in a quaint village. For more than a century, Coppelia has been enchanting audiences. In 1974, when Balanchine decided to add Coppelia to NYCB's repertory, he took the opportunity to update the ballet, adding some male solos gently, more pas de deux, and a new third act.
