Taking flight for the first time ever at the 5th Avenue Theatre in the summer of 2025, enjoy a new staging of this 60s era-defining musical, directed by Bill Berry and Jay Santos.
Incorporating the burgeoning rock 'n' roll scene into its storyline with cultural touchstones like Ed Sullivan and a thinly veiled take-off of Elvis, it premiered on Broadway in 1960 and three years later and it was adapted for the silver screen, with Dyke Van Dyke reprising his role alongside Janet Leigh and Ann-Margret.
Bye Bye Birdie is the Tony Award musical comedy with a book by Michael Stewart, music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Lee Adams. Loosely based on the 50s and 60s exploits of Elvis, the show tells the story of a rock and roll singer, Conrad Birdie, who is drafted into the army at the peak of his fame and has to say goodbye to his fans with a final song and kiss to a lucky girl. Parodying Presley and his sometimes hysterical fanbase, Bye Bye Birdie conjures up the era with songs such as "Put on a Happy Face", "One Last Kiss", "A Lot of Livin' to Do", and "Kids".
