Fall in love with the lilting melodies and timeless romance of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet once more. Lead by Karina Canellakis, an up and coming conductor renowned for her passionate performances and interpretive depth, the Seattle Symphony and principal cellist Efe Baltacigil will perform the soul-stirring Suite No. 2 of the ballet alongside Dvorak's The Wild Dove and Haydn's Cello Concerto in D major.
Composed in 1935, Prokofiev's Shakespearean-inspired work initially was written with a happy ending, but after numerous revisions its heart-wrenching denouement was rightfully returned. Hailed as containing some of the composer's finest and most instantly appealing compositions, as well as one of the most exceptional musical realisations of the bard's poetry, the iconic ballet has taken its place amongst the greats, enjoying numerous revivals over the decades.
